A unique, child-focused exercise lab unveiled at the Arkansas Children's Nutrition Center (ACNC) will help its world-renowned scientists learn more about preventing disease in families around the globe.

The Laboratory for Active Kids & Families is only the second of its kind in the nation, housed at ACNC on the Arkansas Children's campus. Researchers will use the facility to better understand the science of exercise, and the mechanisms by which physical activity promotes health, by observing children and pregnant mothers in fitness and physiology tests.

Twenty-seven years ago, Baptist Health was the first hospital in the state to perform a heart transplant and recently celebrated the life-giving milestone of transplanting the 250th heart since the transplant program began in 1989.

Brittany Dow, 33, of Little Rock, received the 250th heart on Sunday, Oct. 2. She was listed in serious condition, which is to be expected at this time, at Baptist Health Medical Center-Little Rock (BHMC-LR).

Dow was diagnosed with congestive heart failure and was on the transplant waiting list for 31 days.

Ruslan Kleytman, the founder of Akhila Yoga, will be offering an Akhila Yoga teacher training Dec.1-14 through the Arkansas Yoga Collective.

Kleytman has taught yoga trainings throughout the world, including India, Russia, Peru, Mexico, and South Korea. He currently resides in Miami, and has taught many workshops at the Arkansas Yoga Collective.

The trainings are for individuals who want to lead yoga classes, and for those who want to delve deeper into their own practice.

The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Arkansas held a fundraiser on Oct. 6 called "Mixing it Up for Mental Health: A Mocktail Event."

The mixer, held at Fletcher Library in Little Rock, was preceded by an informational presentation on managing the holidays effectively.

Members of the board of directors were present for the event, visiting with guests, and focusing on the topic of mental health.

The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) Schmieding Caregiver Training Program and Walgreens are working together to provide adult vaccinations Oct. 20 at the UAMS Donald W. Reynolds Institute on Aging.

From 9-11 a.m., on the second floor of the Reynolds Institute, 629 Jack Stephens Drive, adult vaccinations will be administered for flu and pneumonia. A TDap (tetanus, diphtheria and whooping cough) booster vaccine will be offered, as well. Educational information on the importance of vaccinations will be distributed to patients.
