As part of National Child Abuse Prevention Month, the Department of Human Services Division of Children and Family Services (DCFS) and several community partners rallied on the steps of the Capitol to bring awareness to the issue. There are 5,172 children in foster care in Arkansas due to neglect, or physical or sexual abuse.
Peter Crooks, PhD, DSc, chair and professor of the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences in the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) College of Pharmacy, recently was named a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors (NAI).
Being named a Fellow recognizes NAI members who have, according to the academy, “demonstrated a highly prolific spirit of innovation in creating or facilitating outstanding inventions that have made a tangible impact on quality of life, economic development, and the welfare of society.”
CHI St. Vincent announced that a new Arkansas law will make it easier to attract and retain physicians from around the world to the renowned Arkansas Neuroscience Institute (ANI).
Act 1061, signed into law by Gov. Asa Hutchinson, provides greater flexibility for out-of-state doctors to serve in academic roles at Arkansas medical centers. CHI St. Vincent strongly supported the legislation, enacted as CHI St. Vincent prepares for a $10 million expansion and relocation of ANI to the CHI St. Vincent North campus in Sherwood.
James M. Raczynski, Ph.D., dean of the Fay W. Boozman College of Public Health at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS), was invested April 20 as the inaugural recipient of the M. Joycelyn Elders, M.D., Chair in Health Promotion and Disease Prevention.
Raczynski, professor and founding dean of the College of Public Health since 2002, has focused the college’s mission on health promotion and disease prevention to improve quality of life for entire communities.
The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) has become the only medical center in Arkansas to be certified nationally as an adult Level 1 Trauma Center by the American College of Surgeons. To achieve the certification, hospitals go through a rigorous review process and must demonstrate they can provide the highest level of trauma care for the most serious and urgent cases.
