Baptist Health Medical Center-Little Rock has implanted the state’s first Total Artificial Heart on a 21-year-old from Jonesboro, Arkansas. The recipient, Chadarius Johnson, is recovering from the groundbreaking surgery, which took place on Tuesday, April 18.

Mayumi Nakagawa, MD, PhD, was invested April 26 as recipient of the Drs. Mae and Anderson Nettleship Chair in Oncologic Pathology at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS).

She is a professor in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Sciences in the UAMS College of Medicine and co-leader of the Cancer Prevention and Population Sciences Program in the UAMS Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute.

Some people who use so-called synthetic marijuana, known by names such as K2 and Spice, may be unable to metabolize the drug, leading them to experience its most harmful effects, a UAMS researcher said today at a national scientific meeting in Chicago.

Cancer patients and survivors were invited to receive free legal assistance on important personal documents April 20 at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS).

The estate planning clinic was held at the UAMS Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute as a free service by local attorneys. It was open to anyone in cancer treatment or who has completed treatment, based on financial need. Attendees met individually with licensed attorneys to prepare wills, living wills and powers of attorney and will receive notarized copies of their documents.
