CARTI has named two new members to its senior management team, according to Adam Head, president and chief executive officer of the statewide network of cancer care providers.

Jake Stover has joined CARTI as chief financial officer and vice president of financial affairs, while Rebecca Pearrow will serve as vice president of business development.

The medical director of the Arkansas Children’s Hospital Team for Children at Risk has received national recognition for her breakthrough efforts to prevent child abuse in the state and beyond. 

Karen Farst, MD, MPH, who also serves as the medical director of the Rebecca and Robert Rice Medical Clinic in the Clark Center for Safe & Healthy Children, was recently named the 2017 recipient of the Ray E. Helfer, MD, Award, a distinguished honor from the National Alliance of Children’s Trust and Prevention Funds and the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Arkansas was the sixth highest state in the United States for antibiotic prescribing in 2014. High rates of antibiotic use can lead to antibiotic resistance, so it is important for antibiotics to be prescribed and used correctly. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that nearly 2 million people will develop an antibiotic resistant infection in the United States each year. Of those, 23,000 people will die from the infection.

Science Café Little Rock, co-sponsored by the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS), will hold its next public forum, “Hibernation: A Mammal Staycation?,” on Nov. 28. Panelists will discuss the habits and habitats of hibernating animals in Arkansas, including bears and bats.

Science Café will be held from 7-9 p.m. at Hibernia Irish Tavern, 9700 N. Rodney Parham Road. Science Café is a relaxed opportunity for monthly exchanges with various experts. No reservations are needed, but seating is limited. Admission is free.
