Robert Hopkins, MD, a professor at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS), recently received the 2018 Outstanding Adult Immunization Champion award for exceptional dedication to protecting adults from vaccine-preventable diseases.

The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) recently added a transplant clinic at its Northwest Regional Campus, which will allow patients who live in northwest Arkansas to participate in the UAMS transplant program locally instead of traveling to Little Rock. 

The current focus of the clinic is post-transplant patients in need of follow-up care. In the future, the clinic plans to include patients in need of transplant evaluations. The clinic at 1125 N. College Avenue schedules six to eight patients one Friday per month for follow-ups to kidney and liver transplants.

Researchers at Arkansas Children’s Nutrition Center (ACNC) recently published a study that reveals cesarean delivery (C-section) may have a significant impact on infant brain development. The manuscript was published in The American Journal of Neuroradiology, produced by the American Society of Neuroradiology.

The new year coincided with a report released by the United Health Foundation (UHF) that showed that Arkansas increased its health ranking by two spots, from 48 to 46 overall. The UHF described Arkansas’s strengths as a low prevalence of excessive drinking and high meningococcal and Tdap immunization coverage among adolescents. They listed the state’s challenges as a high prevalence of smoking, a high cardiovascular death rate, and a low rate of dentists.
