Pope L. Moseley, MD, dean of the College of Medicine and executive vice chancellor at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS), was formally invested June 8 as the inaugural recipient of the Arkansas Medical Society Distinguished Dean’s Chair.

First Lady of Arkansas Susan Hutchinson assisted CARTI representatives in presenting scholarships to 18 pediatric cancer survivors from across the state at a special ceremony held May 31 at the Arkansas Governor’s Mansion. The 20th annual Dennis Jungmeyer Scholarship Awards are valued at $3,500 each.

Science Café Little Rock, co-sponsored by the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS), will hold its next public forum, Cyber Warfare, on June 27. Panelists will discuss the latest cyber threats, artificial intelligence, and ways to protect against computer hackers in the 21st century.

Science Café will be from 7-9 p.m. at a new location – Hibernia Irish Tavern, 9700 N. Rodney Parham Road. Science Café is a relaxed opportunity for monthly exchanges with various experts. No reservations are needed, but seating is limited. Admission is free.

A University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) research team, led by Vladimir Zharov, PhD, DSc, has demonstrated the ability to kill single cancer cells using the world’s smallest laser.

At 22 nanometers in diameter, the laser — known as a spaser — is capable of detecting and killing single cancer cells by generating super-bright light directly in the cells, and transforming the light into heat, nanobubbles, and sound waves. One nanometer is equal to one billionth of a meter.
