Arkansas Children’s Hospital opposes a ballot initiative aimed at legalizing medical marijuana in the state. The position is consistent with recommendations made last year by the American Academy of Pediatrics. Marijuana has been linked to negative health outcomes in children, including psychological disorders, poor lung function and an increased risk of substance abuse later in life.

Richard Turnage, MD, has been named vice chancellor for clinical programs for the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) and CEO of UAMS Medical Center, effective Dec. 1. He succeeds Roxane Townsend, MD, who left UAMS at the end of September.

Grace L. Raja, MD, has joined the CARTI medical staff as a hematologist/oncologist, according to Jan Burford, CARTI president and chief executive officer.

The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) in partnership with the Arkansas Birthing Project make up one of 15 teams from across the nation selected for the inaugural class of Interdisciplinary Research Leaders. Funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, it includes a research grant for the team of about $325,000 over three years.

The northwest Arkansas Mumps outbreak continues to grow, with 492 individuals involved in the outbreak as of last week. Cases have been seen in the Springdale, Rogers, Bentonville, and Huntsville school districts. The Arkansas Department of Health (ADH) is urging residents in these areas to make sure they and their loved ones are up-to-date on their Mumps, Measles, Rubella (MMR) vaccine and practice infection control by washing hands regularly and staying home if they suspect they are sick.
