On Oct. 5, the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) will celebrate its first-ever Day of Giving, a 24-hour push to support the state’s only academic health sciences university through donations to its foundation.
With a goal of $250,000, the campaign is the largest single-day philanthropic effort in the history of the institution.

A University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) research scientist has been awarded a $409,750 grant from the National Institute on Drug Abuse to lead a study investigating ways the brain develops resilience to mental illnesses, like addiction.
Andrew James, PhD, an associate professor in the UAMS College of Medicine’s Department of Psychiatry, is the principal investigator in the two-year study, which will use functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to examine patterns of brain organization in adult subjects who experienced childhood trauma.
The Texas Department of State Health Services, with assistance from CDC, is investigating Brucella RB51 exposures and illnesses that may be connected to the purchase and consumption of raw (unpasteurized) milk from K-Bar Dairy in Paradise, Texas. The investigation indicates that Arkansans were potentially exposed. Symptoms of brucellosis can include fever, sweats, malaise, anorexia, headache, fatigue, muscle and joint pain, and potentially more serious complications (e.g., swelling of heart, liver, or spleen; neurologic symptoms).
Thirteen new members have been elected to the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) Foundation Fund Board of Directors.
The board supports and assists UAMS leadership in delivering the resources necessary for UAMS to achieve its vision and goals. Members can serve up to three terms, for a total of nine years.
The 13 new members were each selected to represent the UAMS advisory board under which they serve, with the goal of gaining official representation from all areas of the institution.
