Health care providers in five Arkansas counties are invited to participate in a program offered free of charge by the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS). The program is designed to improve doctor-patient communication.

The How to Talk to Your Doctor program will be provided to clinics and hospitals in Cleburne, Conway, Faulkner, White, and Van Buren counties, thanks to a more than $60,000 donation from BHP, an Australia-based international producer of iron ore, metallurgical coal, copper, and uranium, as well as oil, gas, and energy coal.

Teaching cancer caregivers the importance of taking care of themselves, as well as their loved ones, is the focus of a new, free workshop being offered on July 27 at the CARTI Cancer Center in Little Rock.

“Who Cares? You Care: Taking Care of the Cancer Caregiver” is a free, open educational workshop addressing the unique gifts, challenges, and fears associated with cancer diagnosis and treatment.

When faced with the cancer diagnosis of a loved one, those closest to the patient will also embark upon his or her own unique cancer experience.

A University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) professor has secured $710,000 in grant funding for the continuation of an interdisciplinary training program for health professionals, with the aim of improving services for children with developmental disabilities.

UAMS has directed the Arkansas Regional Leadership Education in Neuro-Developmental Disabilities (LEND) Project since 1994. The project has been funded by grants from the federal Health Resources and Services Administration.

Kasey Nix, MD, has joined Conway Regional Health System as a hospitalist. A Family Medicine specialist, Dr. Nix began practice on July 17.

Dr. Nix completed a residency and medical degree from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock. He also holds a bachelor’s degree in Biology from UCA, which is part of what led him back to Conway.
