C. Lowry Barnes, MD, chair of the UAMS College of Medicine’s Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, was invested June 1 in the Carl L. Nelson, MD, Distinguished Chair in Orthopaedic Surgery.

Barnes, who graduated with honors from the College of Medicine in 1986, and completed his internship and residency in orthopaedic surgery at UAMS, has served as department chair since August of 2014.

University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) Professor Mark Smeltzer, PhD, has been awarded $11 million in federal funding for Phase II of a program that supports microbiology and immunology research.

Phase I of the Centers of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) grant was awarded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in 2012 at $10 million. Phase II began May 1, and is $11 million.

The Arkansas Regional Innovation Hub announced that Joel Gordon has been named as its new executive director.

Joel has served as the director of making at the Hub since its launch in 2013, and co-founded Arkansas's first makerspace there. He is also the founder of the North Little Rock Mini Maker Faire.

Erick Messias, MD, PhD, MPH, has been appointed associate dean for faculty affairs in the College of Medicine at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS).

Messias is rejoining the UAMS faculty, and will also be an associate professor in the Department of Psychiatry, where he served in a number of leadership positions from 2010 to 2015.

The Arkansas Foundation for Medical Care (AFMC) and the Arkansas Health Care Association (AHCA) recently exceeded a nursing home recruitment objective as part of an initiative to improve the quality of health care provided to nursing home residents across Arkansas. The initiative is a nationwide collaborative of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).
