Yin Yoga gives students the opportunity to access, nourish, and massage the deep connective tissues of the body for a new kind of yoga experience.
A class in Yin Yoga, led by Rena Wren, will be offered Sept. 8 from 7-8 p.m. by the Arkansas Yoga Collective. To register, call (501) 313-2950.
Yin yoga is a quiet practice, suitable for students of all levels of experience. Through the practice of long-held postures, targeting mainly the connective tissue of the low back, hips, and hamstrings, Yin yoga creates space for stillness and nourishment of the body. Many of the poses are seated, supine, or prone, with special attention paid to areas that encompass a joint (hips, spine, and sacrum).
This is a more meditative practice with a focus on the breath, being present in the moment, relieving tension, and letting go. Benefits of Yin yoga include stress reduction, building stamina, lubricating and protecting joints, increasing flexibility in deep tissues, and improvement of the meditation experience.
Props are extremely useful for this type of practice, so blocks, blankets and bolsters may be brought for use in the class.
Rena Wren, RYT 200 and Certified Yin Yoga teacher, is the owner of Shanti Sun Yoga in Little Rock.
