High school freshmen, sophomores, and juniors are invited to apply for a free in-person summer day camp June 13-17 at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS).
The science-themed SONOcamp is limited to 60 students in Little Rock and surrounding areas. Applications are due by March 30.
During the camp, students will work in small and large groups on various guided activities. Examples include:
Demonstrations of anatomy of major organ systems in the body (such as cardiovascular, respiratory, renal, gastrointestinal, and nervous systems) using virtual anatomy dissector software and real human cadaveric specimens.
Ultrasound imaging of live standardized patients (people specially trained to portray patients).
Analysis of 3D reconstructions of Computerized Tomography data.
Recording of EEG and EKG activity.
Using medical simulation equipment.
Students will collect data on standardized patients related to heart rate, blood pressure, pulse oximeter measurements and infrared imaging and learn how to assess reflexes and cranial nerve function. Each small group will be assigned a faculty and student mentor (a medical student at UAMS).
Students will be selected from all applications and notified of their acceptance via email to student and parent/guardian by April 4.
