UAMS Program Offers Support to Children of Cancer Patients

A group to help children cope with a parent’s cancer diagnosis is set to begin March 5 at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS).

CLIMB, which stands for Children’s Lives Include Moments of Bravery, will be offered from 5-7 p.m. on Tuesdays from March 5-April 16 at the UAMS Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute.

There is no cost to participate, and pre-registration is required. To register, call Carrie Calhoon, LCSW, at (501) 603-1612.

Separate groups for children ages 6-12 and their parents meet simultaneously and are led by oncology social workers. Siblings are welcome to attend together.

The children’s group includes art projects and interaction addressing emotions such as sadness, anxiety, fear, and anger, while the parent group focuses on ways to support their children throughout their illness.

CLIMB is a national program sponsored by The Children’s Treehouse Foundation.
