Science Café Focusing on Gut Bacteria May 23

Science Café Little Rock, co-sponsored by the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS), will hold its next public forum, Indwelling Gut Bacteria and You, on May 23. Panelists will discuss the role of microbiome bacteria on the immune system, potential infections, and overall human health.

Science Café will be held from 7-9 p.m. at Whole Hog Café, 12111 W. Markham St. Science Café is a relaxed opportunity for monthly exchanges with various experts. No reservations are needed, but seating is limited. Admission is free.

This month’s panel will include scientists from the UAMS College of Medicine. They include David Ussery, PhD, professor and director of the Arkansas Center for Genomic Epidemiology and Medicine at UAMS; Kevin Young, PhD, professor, Department of Microbiology and Immunology; and Richard Frye, MD, PhD, associate professor, Department of Pediatrics.

Dorothy Graves, PhD, associate director for administration at the UAMS Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute, will moderate the event, and will host the corresponding live call-in program, “Science Café Little Rock,” on National Public Radio-affiliate station KUAR FM89. The science talk show, featuring one speaker from the monthly panel of scientists and experts, airs just prior (6:05-6:30 p.m.) to the live Science Café event. Ussery is this month’s radio guest.
