Science Café Little Rock, co-sponsored by the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS), will celebrate its 10th anniversary on Sept. 26 with several hands-on virtual reality demonstrations, and an expanded version of its public forum science series.
The special edition of the forum will be from 6:30-9 p.m. at the Historic Arkansas Museum, 200 E. Third St. in Little Rock.
In the past decade, Science Café has hosted over 270 panelists, discussed 90 topics, aired 75 radio shows, and hosted 5,800 attendees.
Carolina Cruz-Neira, PhD, professor and director of the George W. Donaghey Emerging Analytics Center at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, will speak at 7 p.m. about Virtual Reality – Window into Other Worlds, and the future of virtual reality. Historic Arkansas Museum representatives will discuss how history is uncovered with the aid of science and technology.
There will be wine, hors d’ oeuvres, cake, ice cream from Loblolly Creamery, and beer provided by Stone’s Throw Brewery.
Dorothy Graves, PhD, associate director for administration at the UAMS Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute, will moderate the event, and host the corresponding live call-in program, “Science Café Little Rock,” on National Public Radio-affiliate station KUAR FM89. The science talk show, featuring a speaker from the monthly panel of scientists and experts, is aired just prior (6:05-6:30 p.m.) to the live Science Café event. Cruz-Neira will be this month’s radio guest.
Science Café is a relaxed opportunity for monthly exchanges with various experts. No reservations are needed, but seating is limited. Admission is free.
Science Café events are held on the fourth Tuesday of the month, except for July, August, and December.
