Jerad M. Gardner, MD, an assistant professor in the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) College of Medicine’s departments of pathology and dermatology, was recently appointed as a deputy editor-in-chief of the Archives of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine.
He is the youngest in the journal’s 90-year history to receive the appointment. The Archives of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine, published monthly by the College of American Pathologists, is the most widely read pathology journal in the world.
“The lives of most practicing pathologists have been touched by Dr. Gardner directly or indirectly, whether they know it or not,” said Philip T. Cagle, MD, the journal’s editor-in-chief. “Dr. Gardner has been the premier champion and visionary for the application of social media, mobile devices and other new technologies to diagnostic pathology practice, professional and lay public education, academic collaboration, professional society outreach, patient support groups and more.”
Gardner, a board-certified pathologist specializing in dermatopathology and bone/soft tissue sarcoma pathology, oversees social media strategy and account management for the journal.
He came to UAMS in 2012 and serves as program director of the dermatopathology fellowship program and clinical co-director of the musculoskeletal/skin block for the College of Medicine.
Gardner’s research interests include bone and soft tissue tumors and skin disease. He has lectured internationally on the topics, as well as speaking to health care professionals locally and across the country on how to use Facebook, Twitter and Instagram professionally. He’s published multiple peer-reviewed articles and authored 30 textbook chapters.
He is a member of the American Society of Dermatopathology, Arkansas Dermatological Society, Arkansas Medical Society, College of American Pathologists, International Society of Bone and Soft Tissue Pathology, International Society of Dermatopathology and the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology.
