Angel Lopez-Candales, MD, has joined the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) as director of its Cardiac Noninvasive Laboratory.
He is also a professor in the UAMS College of Medicine’s Department of Internal Medicine.
Lopez-Candales specializes in using advanced echocardiography to assess the function of the heart and its valves. UAMS is the only adult facility in Arkansas and surrounding states to offer advanced echocardiography. Echocardiograms use ultrasound sonography to produce images of the heart. The facility is commonly known as an “echo lab.”
He earned a medical degree from the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine. Lopez-Candales completed an internship and residency in internal medicine at the Veterans Affairs Caribbean Healthcare System in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He completed a research fellowship and a clinical fellowship, both in cardiology, at the Barnes-Jewish Hospital of St. Louis through the Washington University School of Medicine.
