Six early-career scientists have joined the Arkansas Children's Research Institute's (ACRI) Center for Childhood Obesity Prevention, as the program announces its first wave of National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded projects to help make children better today, and healthier tomorrow.

These investigators are part of a nationally regarded research program making strides in addressing obesity across the nation.

A scientist at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) has reached a status few achieve by being awarded his third concurrent R01-type Research Project Grant by the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Daohong Zhou, MD, received the $1.8 million grant to support his research on a therapy to prevent, and possibly reverse, a lung disease found in patients who undergo radiation therapy for cancer. Zhou is associate director for basic research in the UAMS Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute.

Lyle J. Burdine, MD, PhD, has joined the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) as a kidney, liver, and pancreas transplant surgeon.

Burdine also serves as an assistant professor in the UAMS College of Medicine’s Department of Surgery. Burdine will perform kidney and liver transplants, as well as combined kidney-pancreas transplants. UAMS is the only center in Arkansas that offers adult liver or kidney transplantation.
