A new technology at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) reduces from days to hours the time it takes to identify pathogens associated with life-threatening blood-borne infections.

The FDA-approved Accelerate Pheno system also quickly identifies which antibiotic would be most effective on a case-by-case basis. It is the latest addition to the Clinical Microbiology Laboratory’s array of industry-redefining technologies for the identification and treatment of infectious diseases.

On the heels of the recent nationwide E.coli outbreak that caused Americans across more than a dozen states to become ill and led to one death, the American Medical Association (AMA), in collaboration with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), announced new online continuing medical education (CME) videos aimed at helping physicians combat the spread of foodborne illness. The new videos provide physicians with the information and resources they need to diagnose, treat, and report foodborne illnesses. The videos also educate patients on preventing foodborne illness.

CHI St. Vincent has named Sara Bradley as Vice President of Finance.

Bradley joined CHI St. Vincent in late 2017, having previously worked for Mercy Health System. She served as the Chief Financial Officer for Oklahoma State University Medical Trust in Tulsa, Okla. Before that, she worked as vice president and CFO for Mercy Hospital Hot Springs, which became CHI St. Vincent Hot Springs in 2014.

The Arkansas Department of Health (ADH) is offering free flu shots in all local health units (LHUs). There will be no out of pocket cost for patients, regardless of their insurance status. The state continues to see a high number of flu cases and flu-related deaths this season. Any Arkansan who has not yet received a flu shot can go to the LHU near them. LHUs are listed on the ADH website at www.healthy.arkansas.gov/health-units.
