The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute received a five-year, $11.48 million federal grant to create the Center for Molecular Interactions in Cancer (CMIC).

The grant was awarded by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) Centers of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) program. COBRE grants are awarded to establish centers of research excellence around a specific scientific theme that will ultimately become self-sustaining.

CHI St. Vincent announced plans for its hospitals and clinics related to the April 8 solar eclipse, including expanded convenient care hours for some of its clinics in the path of totality. The move comes as CHI St. Vincent aims to provide healthcare to an expected influx of eclipse visitors to Arkansas while mitigating non-emergency visits to local hospitals.

Jason Demke recently joined Mercy Hospital Fort Smith as its new chief operating officer.

Demke replaces Ryan Geib, who is now president of Mercy Southeast Communities in Missouri. Demke began his new position with Mercy on March 18. Most recently, he served as COO for West Valley Medical Center in Caldwell, Idaho, and previously was vice president of operations at Johnston-Willis Hospital in Richmond, Virginia.

Arkansas Mission of Mercy (ArMOM) is holding its two-day free dental clinic at the Conway Expo Center April 12-13. At the clinic, dental services are provided free of charge by a host of volunteers and sponsors. In the past 18 years, tens of thousands of patients have been treated thanks to the support of dedicated volunteers.

The event is held from 6 a.m.-4 p.m., with patients starting to arrive around 3 a.m. The Conway Expo Center is located at 2505 E. Oak St. in Conway.

A ceremony was held March 25 to celebrate eight separate banners celebrating Arkansans with developmental disabilities on display on outside of DHS Central Office.

Leading the event were DHS Secretary Kristi Putnam, DHS Medicaid Specialty Populations Director Melissa Weatherton, and Arkansans featured on banners plus their families.
