Fellowship-trained medical oncologist Angela Pennisi, MD, PhD, has joined the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS). She sees patients in the UAMS Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute and is an assistant professor in the UAMS Division of Medical Oncology.

The Fearless Caregiver Conference, bringing education and support for family caregivers, will be held Nov. 10 in Hot Springs by Today’s Caregiver magazine in partnership with the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences’ (UAMS) Oaklawn Center on Aging.

The event will be 8:30 a.m. -12:30 p.m. at the Garland County Library, 1427 Malvern Ave. in Hot Springs. The conference is free for local family caregivers who register at www.caregiver.com or by calling 877-829-2734.

The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) College of Nursing has received $100,000 to provide primary care services, with an emphasis on mental health, to older Arkansans.

Half of the money comes from the National Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education at the University of Minnesota, where the UAMS College of Nursing was one of 16 institutions chosen to receive a grant. The other half of the money is matching funds from the UAMS Office of the Provost.

The Department of Human Services (DHS) Division of County Operations (DCO) has expanded call center hours for Medicaid beneficiaries, with operators now available from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday to answer questions.

“We are offering extended hours not only to address long hold times, but also to provide working families some flexibility so they can get their questions answered before school or after dinner,” said Mary Franklin, DCO director.
