Arkansans interested in having a voice in UAMS research programs, or simply learning how research is done, are invited to participate in UAMS’ fall 2017 Community Scientist Academy.

Sponsored by the UAMS Translational Research Institute, the Community Scientist Academy will be on Thursdays beginning Sept. 21 through Oct. 26, from 10 a.m. - noon, on the UAMS campus in Little Rock.

A mandatory boil water order has been issued for the Prairie County community of Biscoe, also known as Fredonia, and also for customers who are south of I-40 in the vicinity of Biscoe/Fredonia, who are served by East Prairie County Water Association. Customers should observe the boil order notice until the Arkansas Department of Health (ADH) determines that the water is safe. The water system serving the Biscoe/Fredonia area has experienced what appears to be a construction related cross connection with the sewer system.

State Medicaid agencies are required to suspend payments for healthcare items and services when there is a credible allegation of fraud against the provider, unless "good cause" exists not to suspend payment.

Using payment suspensions, when appropriate, is important to protect Medicaid funds. Payment suspensions, based on credible allegations of fraud, can swiftly stop the flow of Medicaid dollars to providers defrauding Medicaid. A payment suspension can remain in place throughout the law enforcement investigation, and potential prosecution of the healthcare fraud case.

The Arkansas Department of Health (ADH) has declared the end of the recent mumps outbreak in the state. The last confirmed case was on July 13, 2017. The number of infections in the state has returned to the baseline (non-outbreak) levels.

The ADH began investigating the outbreak of Mumps in August of 2016. There were 2,954 total cases between August 2016 and August 2017. The typical yearly case count is between one and six. This outbreak was the second largest outbreak of mumps in the United States in the last 30 years. Several other states are currently experiencing outbreaks.

CHI St. Vincent Hot Springs recently announced strategic partnerships with National Park College and Henderson State University that will focus on training additional nurses, and enriching the nursing programs at both higher education institutions.
