A new group to help children cope with a parent’s cancer diagnosis is set to begin Oct. 2 at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS).

CLIMB, which stands for Children’s Lives Include Moments of Bravery, will be offered from 5-7 p.m. for six Tuesdays starting Oct. 2 in the UAMS Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute. The Arkansas Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs)/Resilience Workgroup is sponsoring a summit entitled Every Child, in Every Community Sept. 25-16. This group is dedicated to preventing ACEs and helping communities build safe, stable, and nurturing environments for all children. Formed in May 2017, the workgroup is a cross-sector collaboration of 260 individuals representing about 200 organizations and government agencies in healthcare, public health, education, law enforcement, human services, mental health, churches and businesses.

Zoe Weeks of Jonesboro has been awarded the $10,000 Arkansas Mutual Medical Student Award, a scholarship for third-year medical students at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) who want to practice primary care in rural Arkansas.

There were 621 people who died by suicide in Arkansas in 2017, making it the leading cause of violent death in Arkansas in that year. The Arkansas Department of Health (ADH) and partners want Arkansans to know there is help and hope.

ADH and the Attorney General’s office came together at the onset of Suicide Prevention Awareness Week to discuss the state’s efforts to reduce the number of suicide-related deaths at an event at the State Capitol.
