Internationally recognized medical oncologist Michael Birrer, MD, PhD, has been named vice chancellor and director of the Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS). Birrer specializes in gynecologic cancers and will join the university by the end of the year.

The Joint Commission announced recently that Mercy Hospital Northwest Arkansas has earned certification as a Primary Stroke Center. The certification means Mercy Hospital can display The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval, a symbol of quality that reflects Mercy’s commitment to providing safe and effective patient care. Mercy has a stroke team on site 24 hours a day, augmented by support from vStroke, Mercy’s virtual stroke program.

Michael Manley, RN, MNSc, has joined the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) Northwest Regional Campus as director of clinical integration. Michael is responsible for strategically growing UAMS’s clinical scope in Northwest Arkansas and for facilitating relationships with area hospitals and healthcare providers.
