The 17th Annual Midsouth Summit Black Expo, presented by the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS), will celebrate Black history month with a free event highlighting health education and family-friendly entertainment.
This year’s virtual expo, themed “The Time for Health is now,” is set for 9 a.m.-3 p.m., Feb. 27 with a medical drive-thru at 7318 Windsong Drive in North Little Rock. The event will stream live on the UAMS Midsouth Black Expo pages on Facebook and YouTube.
CHI St. Vincent Heart Institute has launched a free, online AFib health risk assessment tool to help Arkansans quickly determine if they may be suffering from the heart arrhythmia known as atrial fibrillation. AFIB affects one in 25 Americans over age 60 and the World Health Organization has designated it a global epidemic. If left untreated, AFib can lead to serious complications like stroke and heart failure, but now Arkansans can take the first step in managing their heart health with this free, online tool.
Michael Manley, RN, MNSc, has been named the chancellor’s chief of staff at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS). Previously, he was the Northwest director of clinical services integration and development, a position in which he developed partnerships for graduate education, clinical, and research development at the UAMS Northwest Regional Campus in Fayetteville.
Baptist Health-Fort Smith opened an inpatient Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) for patients who experience recurring, unprovoked seizures.
Epilepsy is the fourth most common neurological disorder and affects people of all ages.
Neurological exams, blood tests, and imaging tests such as an electroencephalogram (EEG), computerized tomography (CT) scan or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) may be used to diagnose epilepsy. Continuously monitoring a patient’s brain activity is also key to a diagnosis and appropriate treatment.
The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) is again accepting appointments for its public COVID-19 vaccine clinic on the seventh floor of the Freeway Medical Tower at 5800 W. 10th St. in Little Rock. The vaccine is available to Arkansans aged 70 and older as well as teachers and other education workers, including those in K-12, child care, and higher education.
