Monroe, Drew, and Phillips Counties have been added as Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSA) for primary care by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA).

HPSAs are areas with a shortage of primary healthcare professionals and facilities. This designation can be based on several criteria, including geography, facilities, population, and medically underserved areas or populations.

Rangaswamy Govindarajan, M.D., hematologist and oncologist at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, has been appointed chief of the Division of Hematology and Oncology at the UAMS Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute.

Govindarajan, who is also a professor in the division, will lead a growing team of physicians treating patients with benign and malignant hematological disorders, multiple myeloma, and solid tumors. He will help the faculty develop investigator initiated clinical trials, including translational research.

CHI St. Vincent Heart Institute announced the creation of a new clinic to begin serving patients in and around De Queen, Ark. on April 11. Cardiologists Dr. Yuba Acharya, MD, and Dr. Srinivas Vengala, MD, will begin seeing patients on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month at Heart Clinic Arkansas - De Queen, located in the new Sevier County Medical Center at 960 US Hwy 71.
