34 MAR / APR 2026 I  HEALTHCARE JOURNAL OF ARKANSAS ADH CORNER COLUMN ADH CORNER PUBLIC HEALTH is often focused on im- proving health outcomes through increas- ing access to care and promoting disease prevention strategies in traditional clinical settings. Yet one of the most effective tools for improving both physical and mental health is already available in every corner of Ar- kansas, and it doesn’t require a prescription pad or a clinic visit. Getting outdoors for rec- reation and physical activity is a powerful, evidence-based way to support health across the lifespan. Outdoor Recreation as Preventive Medicine More than 1 in 5 adults is physically inactive, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In Arkansas, more than 30% of adults are physically inactive. Getting enough physical activity could prevent 1 in 10 premature deaths. Regular time spent outdoors has been shown to lower stress, improve sleep, reduce blood pressure and symptoms of depression and anxiety, lower the risks for heart disease, several cancers, and dementia, improve cardiovascular fitness, support a healthy weight, and strengthen social connections. These benefits are significant in a state like Arkansas, where rural communities may face barriers to traditional healthcare resources but are often rich in natural resources that support healthy living. For manyArkansans, outdoor recreation is not just a leisure activity; it is part of daily life.
