64 JUL / AUG 2025 I HEALTHCARE JOURNAL OF ARKANSAS ADH CORNER COLUMN CHILDREN’S HEALTH ADVANCEMENTS in heart care are vital for pediatric patients, who often present with complex conditions that result in some of the most critical cases a children’s hospital will see. For children living with congenital or acquired heart conditions, innovation isn’t optional, it’s lifesaving. In pediatric heart care, each advancement must be customized to smaller hearts, growing bodies, and developing minds, and that’s what makes this work both complex and essential. Some notable advancements in heart care have addressed issues with imaging, ease of access, minimally invasive approaches, pharmaceuticals, and transplant procedures. Additionally, many of these advancements would not have been available to the pediatric population without research capabilities. Advancing imaging and access Addressing the needs of underserved populations and patients in rural areas takes intentional and innovative efforts by health systems across the country. Some have taken on the mission of increasing access to advanced cardiovascular imaging by offering providers and patients remote capabilities. Because the number of people with congenital heart disease growing into teenagers and adults is rising, the demand for cardiac MRI and CT services continues to grow. Advanced imaging technologies for pediatric and adult congenital heart disease patients are the most complicated scans for technologists. Because of their complexity, the imaging doctor directly supervises and helps perform the scan for at least half of the studies. For this reason, children and adults with congenital heart disease have historically needed to visit a children’s hospital with the technology and expertise to accurately evaluate their hearts with MRI and CT. This has created a significant barrier to access, especially for those who live in rural areas.
