Wiegel, born and raised in Benton, received a medical degree and completed a residency at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. He went on to become board-certified with the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and is also a fellow in the American College of Obstetrician and Gynecologists (FACOG). Wiegel specializes in obstetrics and gynecol- ogy, providing services in obstetrical care, min- imally invasive surgery, treatment of abnormal uterine bleeding, pelvic pain, ovarian masses, and many other gynecological issues. Flowers received an LPN from Baptist Health College Little Rock. She later received a Bach- elor of Science in Nursing from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville and a Master of Science in Nursing from Chamberlain University. Rockefeller Cancer Institute Awarded NCI Grants Researchers at the Winthrop P. Rockefeller Can- cer Institute at the University of Arkansas for Med- ical Sciences (UAMS) have been awarded five new grants from the National Cancer Institute (NCI) in 2024, totaling $4.6 million. New grants include: • $3.3 million NCI grant to create a Mela- noma Resistance Evolution Atlas, Principal Investigator: Alan Tackett, PhD, Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute deputy director. • $421,000 NCI grant to study cancer-evolved resistance mechanism to enhance adoptive T-cells, Principal Investigators: Tackett and Brian Koss, PhD, UAMS assistant professor of biochemistry and molecular biology. • $393,000 NCI grant to study the mech- anisms of TH17-DC immunotherapy for ovarian cancer. Principal Investigator: Mar- tin Cannon, PhD, UAMS professor of micro- biology and immunology. • $393,000 NCI grant to study SR-A as a therapeutic target in breast cancer. Princi- pal Investigators: Steven Post, PhD, UAMS professor of pathology, and Behjatolah Karbassi, PhD, UAMS associate professor of pathology. • $153,000 NCI grant to study the develop- ment of immunocompetent melanoma brain metastases organoids. CHI St. Vincent Expands Access to Endocrinology, Pulmonology Services CHI St. Vincent announced that its Diabetes and Endocrinology Clinic providers will consoli- date with the endocrinology providers at CHI St. Vincent Little Rock Diagnostic Clinic (LRDC). Like- wise, its Pulmonology and Sleep Medicine Clinic providers will consolidate with the pulmonology providers at LRDC. Both clinics will be moving and will now be located within CHI St. Vincent Little Rock Diagnostic Clinic. The CHI St. Vincent Little Rock Diagnostic Clinic is located at 10001 Lile Drive in Little Rock. UAMS Earns $750K to Relaunch FamilyMedicine Residency Program The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) has earned a $750,000 federal grant to help reestablish a family medicine residency pro- gram in El Dorado. The grant was awarded by the Health Resources and Services Administration, which is part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. UAMS is one of just 15 organizations nationwide to receive funding from an $11 million effort to launch medical residency programs in rural communities. UAMS will use the grant for curriculum devel- opment, recruiting and training faculty and staff, and other costs associated with achieving accred- itation and sustainability.
